The EU Water Initiative (EUWI) recently highlighted some of its main achievements from the last 12 months to an international audience of some 2,000+ water sector professionals attending World Water Week (WWW) in Stockholm from 21 – 26 August. In particular, some of the EUWI’s successes e.g. strengthening political commitment to support the water sector in EU Member States and in developing countries, promoting water governance and capacity building, gained specific mention.

World Water Day 2011 (WWD 2011) convened in Cape Town, South Africa on 22 March 2011. Under the theme of “Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge,” participants gathered to hear addresses from dignitaries such as His Royal Highness, Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange, Chair of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB), Edna Molewa, Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, South Africa, and Joan Clos, Under-Secretary General and Executive Director, UN-HABITAT.

Building on the outcomes from the 5th World Water Forum of Istanbul and other recognised international processes, participants of the kick-off meeting (june 2010)were asked to go beyond identifying important themes and issues, and instead to think about solutions to the world’s major water and sanitation challenges and how to achieve them. Indeed, the 6th World Water Forum will strive to be the “Forum of Solutions.” The development process will aim to find solutions by first identifying targets for a certain number of priority issues.
