On 11 May 2011 from 8-9:45 a.m. in Tophane Hall, ICC, the United Nations World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP/UNESCO) is organizing a special event on “Water issues in the Least Developed Countries” with the Permanent Mission of Tajikistan to the UN, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN, FAO and IFAD.

16 August 2010 – The United Nations today unveiled a decade-long push to raise awareness and mobilize action to fight desertification, which threatens the livelihoods of more than 1 billion people in 100 countries.

Many countries in the UNECE region have already experienced severe impacts from extreme events and disasters. It is likely that anthropogenic climate change (change caused by human activities) will exacerbate the severity and frequency of those events, as well as affecting the region’s water resources in other ways, e.g. through changing precipitation patterns. The need is to adapt now.
