Germany: GSF-National Research Centre for Environment and Health
Research for the Health of Man and the Environment
The GSF - National Research Center for Environment and Health develops scientific principles for the sustainable protection of human health and the natural basis of life. The aim is to identify health risks for humans and ecosystems, to elucidate mechanisms of disease development, to assess the limits to the stress tolerance of the environment and the human immune response, and to develop concepts for prevention.
The link between ecological and medical research and the holistic approach to investigating the pressure on man and the environment in terms of exposure to pollutants and genetic disposition are unique in the world of German Research.
The GSF is a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres (Hermann von Helmholtz Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren). The research is integrated into the Helmholtz research fields 'Earth and the Environment' and 'Health'.
The GSF is a research institution of the Federal Government and the State of Bavaria managed as a limited company. It has approximately 1600 members of staff. The headquarters is on a 50 hectare research campus at Neuherberg to the north of Munich. The GSF also has research institutes in Munich and clinical co-operation groups together with the Munich Universities. It operates the Research Mine Asse in Remlingen near Braunschweig.
