GE: Coalition "Kura-Araks"
The maintenance of population by ecologically clean drinking water, food, as a whole by ecological safety on the significant degree depends on an ecological condition of the rivers Kura and Araks. These rivers becoming soiled in territory Georgia and Armenia by industrial and household wasters run on the territory of Azerbaijan and then flowing to Caspian sea. Practically all ecological pains of Southern Caucasus are dragged in Azerbaijan. All humanitarian funds and the ecological programs in Azerbaijan (ISAR, Soros Foundation, UNDP, TACIS, Eurasia) support the projects on study, protection and improvement of an ecological conditions of the rivers Kura and Araks.
The TACIS organization in 1999 realized the project about the informing of population and awareness rise concerning study, protection and improvement of an ecological conditions Kura and Araks basin in Southern Caucasus.
Under the given project were financed the joint project of Azerbaijan and Georgia NGOs. This project was realized under the management of the Program of awareness rise (TEAP) in Tbilisi and with coordination of Azerbaijan and Armenia offices of organization.
The important result of the project is formation of the public movement what increase the level of informing and awareness on the ecological condition of Kura water and for improvement of its quality.
The second significant project on the river Kura is " Protection and management of transboundary river Kura ". This project is advanced by the Program of development by Organization of United Nations and Global ecological fund. The program of this project includes fulfillment of the following problems:
- the complete and exact analysis of Kura's water in various laboratories and comparison of results
- informing the population and appropriate state bodies about the ecological condition of Kura's water
- maintenance the observance of the requirements of the Convention "Protection and use transboundary water pools " in the relation of the rivers Kura and Araks.
Today the Regional Ecological Center of Caucasus, Eurasia Foundation and Development Alternative Inc develops the projects on problems of water basins of Kura and Araks.
